Let’s get honest about followers…
I have seen far too many posts about followers not mattering from people with extremely large platforms. One person went so far as to say “dont add strangers, focus on people you know in real life, your friends and family”, this person follows 34k people on twitter alone. That is one big family or someone isnt being honest.
Another person said followers don’t matter in the same sentence they were talking about having 100k people following them.
So Im going to be honest…
Across several different networks I have a reach of over 5,000 different people. I am proud of that reach. That number matters and is important. 90% of those people are interested in the content I produce (like this blog), and most of those people I have engaged with at least once. Many have become friends, and some have even extended offers for me to stay at their place if I am ever in their town. Im not going to try to sound humble or cool and say oh its just a number because its not. Im also not so naive to think that lots of followers = influence, because it doesn’t.
If you care about the people engaging with and seeing your content, and you genuinely want to produce content that they would find interesting, and they do… you are creating a platform. Engagement matters, interesting matters, reach matters…if it fits an objective.
So to all the Social media “experts” telling people follower count doesn’t matter because you don’t want to sound cocky… just be honest, and maybe a little cocky.
You look at that follower number everyday and feel good about it.
