Why I don’t often produce original content

You may have noticed if you follow me on tumblr or twitter that I rarely produce “Original content”. This is not by mistake. For me tumblr is like an online notebook, interesting or newsworthy items i am considering I log here for latter use. Most of what I post consists of an image and a blurb about an article. On occasion I do produce original stuff. Linkedin for Students, Klout for Community Managers are two examples. 

There are AT LEAST 3 reasons I don’t post orginal content often (such as this post)… 

  1. My blog (tumblr) is about sharing great information: I am not able to produce great information in bulk, and I dont need to a ton of other people already are. 
  2. My tumblr feed is a place to take notes that I can later share: I use information on this site in meetings all the time.
  3. I dont want to produce for the sake of doing something

The third point is the most important… To many blogs are about publishing content because someone told the author they needed to publish 3 times a week. I really wish some bloggers would stop posting so often and post excellent content instead. When I produce content it is almost always a response to a question, issue or conversation I have had. 

Linkedin for Students was done as a favor for a college professor… 

Klout for community managers was done for community managers struggling with how to use the tool… 

The current project I am working on is in response to a conversation I had with a leading fashion brand’s manager. This post is in response to people that ask me why I dont write more blogs…. 

I am always looking for quality over quantity when I produce… notes about links are another story…

Top 10 reasons why I’m over your “top-10 list”

I am officially over your top ten list! For some reason many folks seem to have a top ten lists for everything/ only posts top-ten. The list’s often consist of bad or lame or trite advice/information.  For some reason top ten lists get shared all the time and seem like they really matter. In hopes that this post gets the word out I will make a top ten list of why I’m sick of your top ten list!

10. Your blog is not a late night TV show… If I really wanted to see top ten lists I could go to hulu and watch them until I die of old age. 

9. You are saying exactly what everyone else is saying… If someone doesn’t have a business page on Facebook it is unlikely they are going to get one because of you. 

8. You are being Lazy… Try pre-writing and provide actual depth to your writing also consider using bullets to break up text.

7. You are destroying it for everyone else… Since every blog you and most blogs other people write are top ten lists, when the rest of us want to do one we are stuck entering over saturation. 

6. You are probably recycling what someone else put…I could copy and paste 100s of top ten lists every day, and they would be “unique” because they would be a mashup. 

5. Not everything has a numerical value… I literally saw a post ranking the top 10 reasons why an @reply is better than a Direct message on twitter. Really one reason is better than another for that? Really? (Why not rank your kids numerically?)

4. You are repeating yourself… Most top ten lists will repeat one point in some way shape or form at least once!

2. You are not an expert… I have seen a flurry of posts about the top-10 reasons that Facebook will do an IPO in 2011, which is not likely, include reasons that make no sense (ie The market is low right now.. so Facebook’s value will rise faster?). One  of the  great things about blogging is anyone can do it, but if you have a top-10 list please be an expert, or do a top ten list of your favorites. 

1. You insult your audience… Generally the list establishes the author as an expert and the reader a mindless idiot. (which I may have done, if so I am sorry)

This is the first top ten list I have ever done. I believe we need  more creativity in our creative expressions. Next time you are doing a top-ten list ask your self if it really needs to be quantified. This post isn’t written for everyone so it may not apply. However I think we should be a little more careful/aware of how we use this specific literary device! 

2 Properties… 2 Strategies

I have 2 blogs… kind of.. 1 blog and 1 tumblr…  When I started using tumblr I was unsure what to do with my blogger account… Honestly I think tumblr is awesome it covers so many of the uses I had for blogger and it does so much more. 

But tumblr isnt a blog and I use it for so much more.. Some of the content I repost I dont even write!

I needed a plan today I came up with one.. 

tumblr will stay the same… if you want to stay ahead of the curve know what I am thinking in real time this is your place… If you want to know what/ who I am and what I think over a long period of time go to my blog… 

The blog will be the greatest hits, the content will not be unique it will just be the best. It will be the stuff that I stand by that I would speak about…
